I recently read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and I, no doubt, was in tears. A Thousand Splendid Suns is historical fiction yet drama and it leaves the reader in this melancholic mood which words cannot define.
The book is deeply moving and unforgettable tale of two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, whose lives become intertwined in the midst of war, loss, and cultural oppression. Set against the backdrop of Afghanistan’s turbulent history, from the Soviet invasion to the rise of the Taliban, the novel tells a profoundly human story of endurance, friendship, and love in the face of relentless suffering.
The book personally affected me in various ways. One of them was that it made me realise that no matter what happens with a person, or no matter how much hatred one begins with, at the end of the day the lingering love will always be witnessed.
This novel by Hosseini does more than tell a story, it gives voice to countless Afghan women whose pain and resilience have gone unheard. It challenges the reader to reflect on themes of gender inequality, love, motherhood, and the cost of survival.
Lastly, A Thousand Splendid Suns is not just a novel but an experience. It’s emotionally intense, socially relevant, and hauntingly beautiful. It will leave you with a deeper understanding of the strength it takes to endure and the courage it takes to resist.
I highly recommend you to read it at least once and then you'll understand how intense Khaled Hossseini is.
Thank You.
